How a run goes

You run a company quarter by quarter. Each quarter you approve line items from your pipeline, then survive whatever the market throws at you. Grow the valuation far enough and you IPO. Run out of cash and the run ends — that is the roguelike part: you start again, knowing more.

The tension is the one every finance person recognises. The line item that grows you fastest is usually the one that leaves you thinnest on cash when something goes wrong.

Why a financial model is the right cover
